Cats of May Series – Behold Stumpy the 3-Legged Cat Original Painting

The Cats of May is a series honoring great cats I’ve known and been owned by. Also the fantastic felines of friends who have been kind enough to tell me their stories and share photos of their great cats.

Today’s cat is STUMPY. Stumpy had an unfortunate encounter with a dog as a kitten and got his front left leg chewed up to the point the leg had to be removed. Along with losing a leg, Stumpy got adopted by my friend into his forever home. Having 3 legs didn’t slow him down one bit!

Size: 3.5 x 5.5 inches painted on a vintage postcard.
    Price : SOLD!

  • Oliver Gripweed – Cats of May #5

Oliver Gripweed – Cats of May #5

    olivergripweed1

Ahhh Oliver Gripweed. After the cat featured on Cats of May #1 passed away a couple of weeks later, Skinney and I went to a local cat rescue to adopt another cat. We walked around and looked for our new family member, and a small paw reached out and grabbed my partner. Her name became Vylette and she was 6 weeks old, waiting to be adopted with her brother who became Oliver Gripweed. We didn’t intend to adopt two cats, but Oliver seemed like he really needed to be with his sister. Turns out I really needed Oliver.

Less than 1 month later, a perfectly normal pregnancy went completely wrong when the umbilical cord collapsed and our son, who was less than a month away from being born, died in utero. I found out two important things. When friends don’t know what to say, they just go away and keep their distance – which really makes you feel alone and I also found out how incredibly healing the love of a single being can be. Oliver became my constant companion, no matter where I was inside or outside in the garden, he was there.

One year I decided to grow stevia, you know the plant you can use instead of sugar, and the lower leaves kept disappearing. I thought my partner was using it, he thought I was. Nope, Oliver was eating it and it made his head smell like maple syrup.

He had horrendous kidney issues, we were able to manage them for years, but when he went, he went fast. I was waiting for a call back on a Sunday from our vet about where to go with him, and less than 20 minutes after I called Oliver had a stroke and died in my arms. I was heartbroken and I still miss him.
He’s buried in the flower garden where he used to love to sit with me.

    This painting is 3.5 x 5.5 and done on a vintage postcard.|

Bumblebee Siamese – Cats of May Series #3

    siamesebee1
Someone sent me a photo fo their cat in a bee costume – I can only assume her cat is chill as heck because I’d honestly be missing body parts if I attempted to put a costume on any of our cats. He was so stinkin’ cute in that photo I had to include him in the series.
So I give you Siamese in a Bee Costume!

This is #3 in the Cats of May series and is 3.5 x 5.5 inches vintage postcard.

  • Cats of May #2 – Black Cat Noodle in a Box

Cats of May #2 – Black Cat Noodle in a Box

I buy stuff online. So I get deliveries and until I break a box down for the recycle bin, our black cat Noodle will attempt to sit in it. No matter the size and she’s not a small cat at all. How she can shove herself into almost any box I will never know. And she will sit there happy as can be.

This is #2 in the Cats of May series and is 3.5 x 5.5 inches vintage postcard.
This piece is sold. If you’d like a cat painting of your own – just contact me about a commission!

  • I Had Some Dreams They Were Clowns in My Coffee… original painting on vintage postcard from 1902

I Had Some Dreams They Were Clowns in My Coffee… original painting on vintage postcard from 1902

    clownsinmycoffee1

This came from a very funny story I was told by someone who can really belt out a tune and loves karaoke, but she learned one night singing “You’re So Vain” that she had one of the lines wrong all this time.

A friend gave me a huge stack of vintage postcards and I had to do a painting commemorating our very amusing conversation. I had to go listen to the song to see if I could that line… not really… but it’s still pretty funny. Apparently she’s not the only person that misheard that lyric according to an in-depth search on the web that lasted like 5 minutes.

This is painted on a vintage postcard postmarked 1902. The size is 3.5 x 5.5 inches.

  • Cats of May – #1 Sleeping Ginger Cat

Cats of May – #1 Sleeping Ginger Cat

I thought for the month of May, I’d paint one cat per day. 🙂 If you have a favorite feline- get it in – your furry friend may wind up in this series.

Now about this piece. This is about a ginger cat we had -he had sort of  a bad attitude and he was extremely likable on random occasions and especially when he was sleeping. We lost him back in 2003 and I still miss his grouchiness.

This watercolor and ink piece is 3.5 x 5.5 inches painted on a vintage post card.
This piece is sold. If you’d like a cat painting of your own – just contact me about a commission!

  • Holding onto a relationship much longer than I should…

I have this favorite pair of jeans. I’ve had 3  kids, I like pie, I work out sporadically, and try to watch my carbs, sugars, and portions. Then I found these jeans like 10 years ago, they fit me fantastically. I don’t wear jeans too often but these are my go-to pair when I do.

So, I was working the basement and caught my leg on a piece of metal and ri-i-i-i-i-p! Tore a well-done one-inch rip in the leg – can’t sew it up. Then and there, I decided to make some denim cat patches from an old pair of jeans my youngest spawn outgrew and they were a too worn to donate. Jo Potocki (@jopotocki) - Instagram photos and videos.clipular (1)FOT2653

I have about 10 patches cut out, I have painted 2 so far with another 4 in the works. After painting, I treated the edges with a fray-stopping product and I’m going to hem them up so they won’t unravel (you know how denim can be).
